6 Week Botanical Art Course

  • Little Studio on the Street 38a The Street Canterbury, England, CT3 2EW United Kingdom (map)

Come and join me for a 6 week evening Botanical Art Course.

Every Tuesday evening from 6 - 8.30pm.

Suitable for beginners and those with a little more experience with watercolour and/or botanical art.

With over 2 hours of tuition each week, I will take you through the step-by-step process to create your own botanical illustration that you can be proud of.

We will be a small group of a maximum of 6 students, to gain the most out of our time together. A lovely opportunity to spend time with like-minded creative souls, as you advance your watercolour skills or try something new for the first time!

All materials will be provided for use during the workshop, and you will be able to take everything home with you to continue with optional small, bitesize homework assignments to further advance your skills over the rest of the week.

Over the 6 weeks we shall explore:

  • The tools and materials used to create a botanical painting

  • How to stretch watercolour paper effectively

  • The importance of observation and fundamentals of creating an accurate drawing from life

  • The use of photographs as an aid in botanical illustration

  • Composition awareness

  • How to transfer your drawing to watercolour paper

  • How to observe form through light and shade

  • How to mix accurate botanical colours with watercolours using an understanding of basic colour theory

  • The different watercolour techniques, including wet-in-wet, layering, blending & dry-brush, to help you develop your own style

  • Troubleshooting; what to do when things don’t quite go to plan

  • The intricacy and beauty of nature, and the therapeutic benefits of studying plants & putting paint to paper.

Included in the cost:

  • A total of 15 hours of small group tuition

  • All materials for use during the course

  • Goodie bag for you to take away including a plywood art board, art pencil and three paintbrushes recommended by Helen for you to keep and hopefully encourage you to continue with your practice after the course has finished

  • An information booklet including the course outline, materials used and recommended in the course, and tips and tricks for you to use as reference alongside Helen’s tuition

  • Open access to email me for any advice on your work during the 6 week period.
